"A Bouquet of Rosιs":

Here are notes from our most recent Wine Tasting:
Wednesday, April 16th 2008 – Syrah & Shiraz

Domaine Alain Voge – Les Peyrouses – Cotes-du-Rhone AOC – 2004
Varietal:
100% Syrah
Comments:
Some good violet and dark, red fruit & granite. A purple color with a nose of intense ripe cherries. This fruit is found in the mouth as well, along with notes of liquorice & light pepper. Mouth-filling, round with supple tannins.
Further:
As the 4th generation of the Voge family to make wine in Cornas, Alain inherited his domaine at a time when it was hardly worthwhile to harvest grapes. After WWII, a bushel of local peaches was worth more than a case of Cornas, so Alain supplemented his income by farming fruits & vegetables.

Montes Alpha – Alpalta Vineyard – Colchagua Valley, Chile – 2006
Varietal:
@90% Syrah , 7% Cabernet Sauvignon & 3% Viognier
Comments:
Ruby-red. Energetic cherry-cola and raspberry aromas offer impressive clarity and a suave floral overtone. Sweet red and dark berry liqueur flavors are complemented by sexy vanillin oak and Asian spices, with supple tannins carrying through the finish. Emphatically modern and quite seductive. 90 Points – Wine Spectator
Further:
Montes was named “Winemaker of the Year” by Wine Spectator in the years 2002 and 2006. Only three Chilean wineries are featured in the Robb Report; “Montes led the way in establishing that Chile could produce luxury Bordeaux-style wines to compete on the world stage. 100 Top Wineries Worldwide

Meyer Family Cellars – Sonoma – 2003
Varietal:
100% Syrah
Comments:
Sourced from six Mendocino County vineyards, this wine demonstrates this great varietys potential for elegance and complexity when produced from cool-climate fruit. This wine displays high-toned, wild berry and cherry characteristics, typical of Mendocino, along with varietal aromas of blueberry and white pepper. Firm, bright acidity balances the Syrahs ripe fruit and rich mouthfeel.
Further:
Established in 1987 by Silver Oak founders and former owners Justin and Bonny Meyer, the goal was to create a family wine brand that drew upon their extensive experience in the Napa and Alexander Valleys.

Mr. Riggs – The Gaffer – McLaren Vale – 2006
Varietal:
100% Shiraz
Comments:
Purple-colored, it exhibits a slightly muted nose of damp earth, cinnamon, pepper, and blue fruits. Supple-textured and full-bodied, the wine has gobs of ripe fruit, layered flavors and excellent balance in its forward personality. 90 Points – Wine Advocate
Further:
Named in honor of John "The Gaffer" Riggs (1814-1902), the great-great-great grandfather of winemaker Ben Riggs, acknowledging 150 years of the Riggs family rich farming heritage in South Australia. As a winemaker, Ben achieved Bushing King status in 2000 - a unique award that recognizes the maker of the best wine at the McLaren Vale Wine Show

Tempus Alba - Preludio – Mendoza, Arg. – 2004
Varietal:
100% Syrah
Comments:
This wine exhibits an elegant personality with notes of cinnamon and cloves and a clear nose reminiscent of ripe plums, cherries and anise. With sweet tannins and a long finish remembering its descriptors. Aromas of red fruit with dabs of spice and eucalyptus. Great mouth-feel. 87 points – Wine Advocate
Further:
Winemaking has been is this family for over 100 years. Their Argentina winery has been open since February 2003, & their name is derived from the Latin “Time of the Dawn”.

Clos Mimi – Petite Rousse – Paso Robles – 2005
Varietal:
Syrah
Comments:
Very Crozes-Hermitage-like, this wine offers sweet red cherry and darker currant notes with some tapenade, spice box, and roasted herbs in a supple-textured, medium-bodied, delicious, and complex wine meant for drinking in its first 4-5 years of life. Like all the wines at this artisinal winery, it is bottled unfined and unfiltered. This is always a dead ringer for a French northern Rhone, and the 2005 continues that pattern. 89 points – Wine Advocate
Further:
Established in 1996 by Tim and Mimi Spear, In 1988 Tim had the good fortune of interning alongside a young Jean-Louis Chave in California. Winemaking for Petite Rousse is based on Tims experience working at Chβteau Lynch-Bages and eleven and a half deeply enriching months in Bordeaux.

Langmeil Winery – The Valley Floor – Barossa Valley, Au. – 2006
Varietal:
100% Shiraz
Comments:
Bright ruby. Smoky cherry and dark chocolate on the nose, with a bright hint of fresh rose. Spicy, tightly wound red berry flavors gain depth with air, picking up bitter chocolate and candied violet notes. Tangy red- and blackcurrant flavors dominate the long, juicy finish, which displays noteworthy clarity and persistence. 91points – Stephen Tanzer
Further:
The Langmeil estate was originally founded in 1844. The first Shiraz vines, planted at that time, still produce premium Shiraz today, making Langmeil the site of the oldest producing vineyard in the Barossa Valley. This wine is a blend of old and new Shiraz vines sourced from the Barossas valley floor, complementing the different flavors which are sourced from individual vineyards. The age of the vines range from 120, 70, 50 and younger vine parcels.

Mollydooker – Blue Eyed Boy – Barossa Valley – 2006
Varietal:
100% Shiraz
Comments:
The 2006 Shiraz Blue Eyed Boy is predominantly Padthaway fruit. Purple-colored, it has an intense aromatic display of smoke, violets, mulberry, blueberry, and chocolate. This leads to a full-bodied, plush, wine with layers of ripe, spicy black fruits, excellent focus and delineation. The tannins are well-concealed but this wine has enough stuffing to evolve for 6-8 years. 96 points – Wine Advocate
Further:
The first vintage of this stunning Shiraz is named after their son, Luke. They bottle their wines with a little extra inert nitrogen gas as a natural preservative to protect the wine from oxidation. If you think about flavor in a wine being like a round ball, what the nitrogen does is flatten out the back end of this ball. By doing the Mollydooker Shake, you release the nitrogen gas and the flavor ball becomes round again, allowing the wine to show its full flavor profile.
